An Introduction to Myself & My Blog

Small town life is just like how it seems in the movies. The stereotypes of gossiping locals, crowded football stadiums and teenage mischief are true – just as true as the stereotypes of welcoming neighbors, community outreach and delicious, home cooked food. Growing up in a small town was a mixed bag of positives and negatives, each defining the person I am today.

One of those defining characteristics small town life gave me was my love of traveling. American media likes to focus on the coziness of tiny neighborhoods, but anyone who comes from one knows that that coziness is a byproduct of becoming too familiar with your surroundings. For many small towners it’s comforting to know where every street leads and where every person comes from, but for me, that comfort gave me a restless desire to see the world.

On May 11th, 2019, that restlessness took hold and I embarked on my first trip out of America. For eight days I explored Guatemala, a country defined by its people and the beauty of its terrain. As a journalism major at Texas State University, I chose to write about my trip in an effort to document my experiences and to share them with anyone interested in adventuring for the first time.

In this blog I’ll detail my experiences visiting metropolitan cities, hiking through mountains and gazing upon volcanoes. I hope all who read my posts enjoy them just as much as I enjoyed traveling.
